Lillian takes a well-paid caregiving job in a robot-filled Philippines, then discovers gaps between the people she meets and the records that supposedly define them. Victoria starts from recognisable work, medication and administrative systems before allowing the mystery to widen. Choose it for a Philippine perspective on who technology helps and whose humanity it can obscure. Its imagined 2020s belongs to a novel first published in 2013, rather than a description of present-day infrastructure.
