The Time Machine (1895)
Book
Published
Wells turns a mechanical journey into the distant future into an argument about what a society's present arrangements may become. Its brevity makes the contrast with larger time-travel constructions especially useful: this is a journey through history's consequences rather than a manual for correcting yesterday. Read it for speculative clarity, class and unsettling distance. It also supplies the essential starting point for Baxter's much longer sequel, The Time Ships.
