When communications fail in a northern Anishinaabe community, newcomers bring claims to authority along with their need for shelter. Rice makes survival depend on decisions about land, leadership and knowledge already held within the community. This post-apocalyptic novel turns attention from a new frontier to a people for whom catastrophic disruption has an existing history. Its slow gathering of unease rewards patience, with ordinary family life establishing what is at stake before the crisis intensifies.
