Coleman makes the familiar language of settlement do unsettling work, following people whose lives are governed by categories imposed on them. Her Noongar perspective informs an Australian story that asks what readers assume when they hear about settlers, natives and supposedly empty land. Go in knowing little of the plot: its speculative design changes how earlier scenes read. The shifting viewpoints expose a hierarchy without asking us to treat the power on either side as equal.
