Remnant Population (1996)

Ofelia is seventy when she refuses to leave an abandoned colony. Gardening, practical observation and the freedom to set her own routines give this first-contact story its centre. Moon lets her be irritable, inventive and mistaken without making age a joke or a certificate of wisdom. Start here for an older woman whose experience matters precisely because the people managing her life have stopped paying attention to it.
