Lauren's journal follows the practical work of finding companions and forming a community as existing protections fail. Water, money, shelter and trust never become mere background. Butler's severe imagined California is useful here because the response includes a developing collective vision, alongside immediate survival and predatory violence. The novel's speculative empathy condition adds another pressure on its narrator. Parable of the Talents continues the story; this is the beginning of a larger social experiment.
