If people can manufacture basic necessities outside the formal economy, why continue accepting the terms of a bad job? Doctorow follows people trying to make that refusal into a durable way of living, then confronts the power of those who still control wealth and institutions. Choose it for arguments about cooperation and ownership that extend beyond imagining a larger pay cheque. The scope eventually reaches far beyond ordinary employment, and the characters spend substantial time debating how to organise their alternatives.
