Human and humanoid workers give statements about life aboard a ship, but the language of performance and procedure cannot contain what they are experiencing. Ravn makes the gap between being a productive unit and having an inner life increasingly strange. The Employees, originally published in Danish as De ansatte, is translated by Martin Aitken. Its short, numbered testimonies form an experimental novel, so read for a disquieting workplace chorus rather than a continuous account from one narrator.
