Embers of war (2018)

The sentient warship Trouble Dog has left military service for an organisation that rescues ships in distress. Captain Sal Konstanz and the people aboard her have histories that make this new purpose difficult as well as necessary. Powell gives both vessel and crew a stake in learning how to save lives together. The first Embers of War novel is a good choice for hard-earned loyalty and rescue work under fire. Its past genocide and renewed violence keep the warmth from becoming uncomplicated.
