Hybrid Child (2018)

Ōhara follows an escaped cyborg able to consume and take on other forms, then lets that unsettling capacity open into a much larger story of bodies, machines and reproduction. Jodie Beck translates from Japanese. Choose it for a demanding feminist transformation of space opera, where family roles and biological categories refuse to stay stable. The novel’s linked movements ask the reader to adjust scale and perspective, and its disturbing treatment of a child’s death makes it a markedly dark choice.
