The Invincible by Stanislaw Lem (1973-01-01) (1973)
Book
Published
A powerful human expedition finds that its equipment and assumptions may be poorly suited to the life it has encountered. Lem makes technical confidence itself part of the suspense, with an alien ecology that challenges the desire to identify an enemy and defeat it. Bill Johnston’s direct translation from Polish is published by MIT Press. Older English editions, including the 1973 version, use an indirect translation; check the credits if choosing between copies. Read for the limits of mastery rather than conquest.
