Ogawa imagines an island where things disappear from collective memory and those who remember become vulnerable. Stephen Snyder’s translation from Japanese preserves the quiet intimacy of a story about a novelist trying to protect her editor. It broadens dystopia towards fable: the governing mechanism remains less important than the slow alteration of what people can feel and recognise. Choose it for patient, disturbing attention to ordinary objects and attachment, rather than a technically explained future state.
