Altered Carbon (2002)

A billionaire can survive the death of a body and hire someone to investigate its murder. That opening problem gives Morgan a reason to examine stored consciousness, missing experience and the unequal means of keeping a person alive. Takeshi Kovacs's enquiry is a violent noir journey through the institutions benefiting from the system. Read the original novel for an investigation that depends on the gap between a surviving self and the information lost with an earlier body.
