When Gravity Fails (1987)

In the Budayeen, bought-in skills and personalities complicate familiar assumptions about who is capable of a crime. Effinger puts Marid Audran's independence under pressure as a murder enquiry draws him into the power structures he would rather negotiate at arm's length. Choose it for hard-boiled cyberpunk whose technological conveniences also threaten reliable identity. The decadent setting and rough humour come with violence and sexual material; this begins a continuing sequence.
