A murder enquiry crosses a boundary that changes what witnesses can admit to noticing. Miéville makes perception and jurisdiction part of the investigative machinery, so a clue cannot be separated from the habits that determine whether someone will acknowledge it. This is a police procedural at the edge of weird fiction, with social rules doing much of the speculative work. Follow Inspector Borlú's attention closely; the cities' arrangement is something to learn through the case.
