The Collector (1963)

Frederick Clegg kidnaps art student Miranda after a windfall gives him the means to arrange the life he wants. His account of care and patience is set against her experience of captivity, making the mismatch between self-description and coercion impossible to ignore. Fowles gives Miranda a voice of her own rather than leaving her only as the object of his explanations. The confinement, sexual threat and cruelty make this an especially severe choice.
