A daughter's attempt to revisit a holiday keeps bringing affection up against what a child could not understand about her father. The ending preserves that gap without making their shared happiness false. A complete explanatory answer would change the nature of her remembering; the film's ache comes from loving someone whose inner life cannot be fully recovered.

About Aftersun
Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories fill the gaps between camcorder footages as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the troubled man she didn't.
