Fear makes the need for certainty increasingly urgent, even when nobody can know enough. Frank Darabont's film ending, which differs from the novella, forces that problem into a brutal final consequence. It is deliberately divisive and exceptionally distressing, but its force comes from the limit of a frightened person's knowledge rather than a monster being harder to defeat.

After a violent storm, a dense cloud of mist envelops a small Maine town, trapping David Drayton and his five-year-old son in a local grocery store with other local residents. They soon discover that the mist conceals deadly horrors that threaten their lives, and worse, their sanity.
