Flatland (1884)
Book
Published
A two-dimensional narrator confronts the possibility of another dimension, and the effort to imagine it becomes inseparable from his society's hierarchies. Read for the way a simple geometrical constraint changes the reader's thinking. Abbott's Victorian satire includes harsh assumptions about women and rank; those limitations deserve attention alongside the elegant spatial experiment. It stands alone and rewards a pause to picture what the narrator cannot.
