Elder Race (2021)

A princess seeks a legendary sorcerer's help; he understands himself as an anthropologist living among the descendants of settlers. Tchaikovsky sets those accounts beside each other, so the same encounter changes with the speaker's vocabulary and assumptions. The novella's focused attraction is that gap in interpretation. It also takes the anthropologist's depression seriously. It stands alone, with both adventure and uncertainty about what another person can understand.
