All Systems Red (2017)

A security construct has secretly freed itself from compulsory obedience and would prefer to watch entertainment. A planetary survey mission makes that private freedom difficult to protect. Wells gives the question of autonomy a funny, anxious voice instead of treating it only as an abstract problem. This is the first Murderbot novella: its immediate mission supplies a compact story, while the character's larger development continues through the series.
