The Time Machine (1895)
Book
Published
Wells sends one traveller far enough into the future to make familiar assumptions about progress look fragile. The journey works as a concentrated test of what a society's divisions might become over immense stretches of time. Its strongest images arrive with disturbing economy. This is a complete, short work, although its Victorian account of class and evolution invites argument rather than passive agreement.
