Dissolution (2004)
Book

Matthew Shardlake investigates a killing at a monastery in 1537, when legal authority and religious conviction are being violently remade. Sansom makes the practical business of inspection, evidence and institutional survival matter to the case. A strong starting point if you want Tudor history to determine what people can say and risk. The cloister is a workplace under threat, with conflicting interests rather than a decorative medieval backdrop.
