The Silver Pigs (1989)

Falco follows a case from imperial Rome to Britain, and the movement of metal, money and people gives the investigation its substance. Davis makes cramped accommodation, family demands and earning a living feel as important as high politics. Her wisecracking informer deliberately borrows the voice of a modern private eye. Read for material and social texture underneath that comic convention, rather than expecting a transcription of Roman speech.
