A medical apprentice and a housemaid investigate deaths in Edinburgh in 1847, amid experiments in anaesthesia. Their unequal access to education and professional authority creates friction as well as complementary knowledge. Ambrose Parry is the partnership of Chris Brookmyre and medical historian and anaesthetist Marisa Haetzman. Choose it for working rooms, patient care and the boundary between respectable practice and dangerous innovation. The crime plot is fictional, with some very grim deaths.
