A Place of Execution (1999)
Book
Published
The disappearance of Alison Carter in 1963 is investigated first through a young inspector’s work, then through a journalist’s attempt to tell the story decades later. McDermid gives the later account its own pressure: the original investigator suddenly wants publication stopped. The question of who can authoritatively narrate a closed chapter becomes part of the mystery. This standalone rewards patient attention to an insular village and the obligations people continue to feel towards it. Keep the later revelations unspoiled.
