People leave a deeply unequal society and try to build communities where shared fabrication replaces the usual struggle over necessities. Doctorow makes their experiments vulnerable to both internal disagreement and external force. The practical attraction is the attempt to organise abundance without turning it into another hierarchy. Expect long arguments, technological speculation and violence as the struggle expands; the imagined tools open possibilities without making cooperation automatic.
