Kevin Claiborne lives in a greener California, but protecting local land still means argument, planning decisions and relationships that complicate principle. Robinson gives an ecological utopia ordinary civic problems instead of treating its arrival as the end of politics. The small scale is its strength: a better system still needs people prepared to attend meetings and disappoint friends. This Three Californias novel presents an alternative future rather than continuing the earlier books' plot.
