Dawn (1987)

Lilith awakens among the alien Oankali after a human catastrophe. Butler takes that intimate situation through the changing perspectives of Dawn, Adulthood Rites and Imago, also collected as Lilith's Brood. The changing scale is biological and political: choices about one person's body become questions about a species' future. The trilogy is complete, and its characters' attachments remain consequential. Expect deeply uncomfortable questions about consent and dependency rather than a simple account of benevolent rescue.
