Союз еврейских полисменов (2008)

Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union gives Jewish refugees a temporary home in Alaska, then sets a murder investigation inside the culture their descendants have built. The impending return of the district to Alaskan control makes belonging a practical uncertainty. Language, religion and police work turn the counterfactual into lived experience. The noir story is funny and melancholy. Look for the English title given here; the linked edition is Yu. Balayan's complete Russian translation.
