A woman arranges her funeral and is murdered a few hours later. Horowitz uses the puzzle to introduce Daniel Hawthorne and a fictional version of himself as the detective's reluctant chronicler. Their friction gives the first book a recurring engine without making the reader wait for a later instalment to see it work. Choose The Word Is Murder for deduction mixed with jokes about writing a detective story; it is a different series from Horowitz's Susan Ryeland mysteries.
