Defectors (2017)

In 1961 Moscow, an American publisher visits the older brother who defected years earlier, ostensibly to help edit his memoir. Family affection becomes entangled with a manuscript that has already passed through official hands. Kanon makes dialogue do much of the work: an apparently intimate exchange can be both a reunion and a negotiation. Choose this standalone for the problem of trusting someone whose charm is one of his professional tools.
