Phil Knight

Knight and coach Bill Bowerman each contributed $500 to Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. Their initial business imported Japanese running shoes, with Knight selling at track meets and Bowerman bringing technical knowledge and relationships with athletes. Nike developed later. It is a useful example of beginning with distribution and a tightly understood customer group, while recognising a supplier, a co-founder and later finance in the company's growth.
