Blue (1971)

For anyone who thinks confessional songwriting means a diary set to plain chords, Joni Mitchell makes vulnerability sound wonderfully mobile. Piano, guitar and dulcimer leave space around melodies that keep changing direction. A Case of You is an inviting doorway, but the album's shifts between freedom and attachment give its intimate songs their lasting tension.
