The Grifters (1963)

Roy Dillon lives by small cons until the connections between his work, his mother and his lover become harder to keep separate. Thompson is interested in the price of depending on people whose affection cannot be detached from manipulation. The attraction here is the collision of competing survival strategies, not an elaborate master scam. The dialogue and domestic hostility sting; expect sexual exploitation and violence, with little room for a comforting division between business and family.
