Justin S. Morrill
Person
Born
Morrill's 1862 land-grant legislation supplied a funding mechanism for colleges teaching practical subjects alongside broader education. States, university leaders and faculty turned that framework into lasting institutions. The land was also tied to Indigenous dispossession, which belongs inside the account of how the endowments were built. His case joins two questions that should be studied together: widening education and examining who paid for it.
