Alexander Hamilton
Person
Born
As the first US Treasury secretary, Hamilton built the structure for collecting revenue, managing debt and keeping federal finances functioning. Congress established the department, and officials made its procedures work. The Treasury's endurance should be distinguished from the First Bank of the United States, whose charter lapsed. His case helps separate a lasting administrative institution from the survival of every policy its architect preferred.
