Maulana Azad
Person
As India's first education minister, Azad helped establish an institutional home for advanced technical education, formally inaugurating IIT Kharagpur in 1951. The Sarkar committee had already developed the proposal before independence, and directors, teachers and later governments built the wider system. His contribution is worth following through the creation of a teaching and research institution, while keeping elite technical training distinct from the separate task of universal schooling.
