Clement Attlee

Attlee's government gave the NHS the parliamentary backing and public funding needed to become a lasting service. Aneurin Bevan negotiated its creation, drawing on earlier planning and the work of administrators and medical staff. Attlee belongs here for holding that collective project together. The useful lesson is how a political majority can turn a commitment to access into an institution that survives changes of government.
