Josephine Cochrane
Person
Born
Cochrane wanted dishes cleaned without the breakage associated with hand washing. Working with mechanic George Butters, she developed a pressure-based dishwasher and patented it in 1886. Hotels and restaurants proved more promising early buyers than ordinary households, whose plumbing and budgets were limiting factors. The useful distinction is between the person who first feels a problem and the customer group able to pay for the solution.
