Nick Woodman

Photographing yourself while surfing is difficult when your hands and attention are occupied. Woodman first worked on a wrist-mounted solution, and GoPro's initial HERO product was a 35mm film camera in 2004. Camera manufacturers and later engineering teams were part of the development. The business grew from making a camera usable in a particular situation, not from inventing photography or starting with today's digital action camera.
