Blakely wanted the smoothing effect of tights under clothing without feet showing through open-toed shoes. Her answer became Spanx, launched in 2000 after development work and negotiations with hosiery manufacturers. The problem was narrow enough to demonstrate immediately, while stores and later television exposure supplied reach. Her route shows why a recognisable discomfort can be a useful opening for a product business.
