Horses (1975)

Patti Smith's debut sounds like someone deciding that a rock band can carry poetry, street talk and a declaration of self all at once. Gloria provides a familiar musical foothold before the words pull away from it. The longer pieces demand more patience, but their spoken urgency makes the record's personality unmistakable.
