Dirty Mind (1980)

Prince compresses funk, pop and the snap of punk into an eight-song, roughly 30-minute statement. When You Were Mine makes the melodic appeal immediate, and the lean sound keeps the energy close. The brevity comes with sexually explicit material, including taboo subject matter, so this is a bracing choice rather than an easy background record.
