The Dispossessed (1974)
Book
Published
An anarchist society can abolish property and still make dissent difficult. Le Guin sends physicist Shevek from austere Anarres to wealthy, unequal Urras, letting each world expose the other's evasions. Its 1974 argument remains valuable because neither arrangement gets an easy victory. The intellectual excitement comes through friendships, work and the costs of leaving. Pair it with Cory Doctorow's Walkaway to ask how different material resources alter the possibilities of freedom.
