Dawn (1987)

Lilith awakens after nuclear catastrophe to find that humanity's rescuers expect a genetic bargain. Butler's 1987 opening to the Xenogenesis trilogy refuses to let survival settle the question of consent: the Oankali offer real benefits while controlling the available choices. Uncomfortable intimacy does more work here than a straightforward invasion plot. Ruthanna Emrys's A Half-Built Garden makes a useful later conversation about negotiating care without surrendering the right to refuse.
