Strange Mercy (2011)

St. Vincent sets poised singing against guitar sounds that can feel clipped, distorted or suddenly unstable. Cruel offers a memorable melody inside that tension. The unusual textures have a dramatic purpose: they make composure sound hard-won, while the rhythmic precision keeps the songs from dissolving into effects.
