The Shadow King (2019)

Ethiopia's resistance to Italy's 1935 invasion is seen through Hirut, a servant who becomes a fighter. The women around her have conflicting loyalties and ambitions, extending the story beyond an uncomplicated celebration of bravery. Choose it to encounter this war through Ethiopian lives and to consider who military histories remember. Captivity, sexual violence and the uses of photographs make this a demanding, richly layered read.
