For readers who want historical romance beyond aristocratic Britain, Eddy and Rhine's attraction unfolds in post-Civil War Nevada. His life passing as white makes an honest relationship with a Black woman costly. Community, work and racial hierarchy give the courtship weight, with on-page sex. The optimistic romance sits alongside racism and danger, rather than replacing the period's obstacles with decorative scenery.
