Jack Dangermond

Jack and Laura Dangermond developed Esri from a small environmental and land-use consultancy into a geographic-information software company. They kept it privately financed, using the business's earnings for further work. Mapping software was supported by services, specialist knowledge and customer relationships. Their example makes the connection between financing and product development concrete: recurring customer work could support a long engineering programme without a venture exit.
